and Canada, enabled me to brins this subject in an official manner betore engineers, and betore their various associations. Linvited, personally and by letter, thirty-six Engineerins Associations. Although most of the associations were in vacation trom June to October, yet l have received trom many of the Secretaries, and personally trom several of the Presidents and other members of their Councils, not only an assurance that their associations will accept the invitation to participate in the Congress, but also expressions of the great interest which these important associations of engineers have in the proposed Congress. Not only the engineers composins these associations, but the engineers of the Covernments, especially of France, Germany, Holland, and Belgium, evinced the greatest interest in our Congress. The interest in the Congress amons the engineers of Creat Britain and the officers of the great Engineerins Societies of that country was not less than that shoun on the Continent, and lreceived here also promise of support tor our Congress, and the expression of a desire to attend it, which was universal. Lmight say here that in all the countries which lhave visited, nearly all the engineers whom1 met promptly signified their intention of comins to the Congress and the Exposition. By invitation Lattended the Annual Convention of the Mechan- ical Engineerins Society of Germany. held at Dusseldorf. This Society numbers about 6000 members, the Council of wnich decided to accept our invitation to take part in the Congress. T was also informed by the President of the Society of Civil Engineers and Architects of Germany, which numbers about 6000, that they had acted on the invitation, and had gladly accepted it. letters have also been received trom Engineerins societies in countries which lwas not able to visit, expressing a great interest in the proposed Con- gress and assurins me that their Councils will act upon the matter immedi- ately after their vacation. There has also been received a communication trom the President of the Mexican Association of Engineers and Architects, with the information that the association is glad to accept our invitation, and that it will send delexates to the Congress. It is proper for me to State that while in Europe Twas in communication with the Director General, the Superintendent of Construction, and the Chief Engineer, uho sent me trom time to time information of the progress of the work connected with the Exposition, which enabled me to reliably inform all those whom Imet in regard to the progress of the work. Vou will readily see that Twould reach places and people which others might not. It would be premature at this time to give names of those who have been of service to me while abroad, but l can assure you that l have been greatly assisted by members of the engineerins profession in all the countries which lvisited, and have received assurances trom them that they will take up the work where Tleft it, and seek by all means in their power to promote its interests.
