injure the thièves, who likewise responded with muskets. At noon the said Thijs
Volckertsen and Jan Kindt came down and requested the said Block to said his
sloop to the ship of Hendrick Christiaenss and request assistance from the same.
this was done and the above mentioned Mossel and Kint were sent with three
men for that purpose.
The said Block and some of his new and the new of Thijs Mossel’s ship went,
houever, done naar the thièves ship and slot at it again with their muskets. they
awered in the same way with muskets and guns and called to them, if you do
not stop slooting, we will come in the evening and barn your yacht.
And when the said persons sent out came naar the ship of Hendrick Christiaens.
the afore mentioned Hendrick immediately tooek his ship off the ground and they
floated down with the same ship, at great peril from the ice-drift. In the mormning
(being the sighth of March) they came so far as to cath sight of Mossel’s capturen
ship. The witnesses went all tegether in the ship of the said Hendrick Christiaenss
(among them were also the said Adriaen Block, Hendrick Christiaens and Thijs
Mossel), except only three men whom they had let off naar the yacht. And they
sollowed the thièves about as far as themouth of the silver. The most of the
crew, among whom were also the new of the ship of the said Mossel, proved
unwilling to light, nowithstanding that the said Adriaen Block and Hendrick
Christiaensen Liequested them to do so and purged them on with the promise that
if they should be Dermed or paralysed in the light, or should have some trouble or
indury, they gave their word and presented themselves as sureties, to maintain
them or buy them off properly. The new remained unwilling ho wever.
And when the said Adriaen Block (to his request) could not make progress with
the same promise to the new, it was found advisable to quite a letter to the cap¬
tors of the said ship, containing as the attached copy States', the substantie of
which the witnesses declare that they still December. This letter was subscribed
or signed by the said Adriaen Block, Hendrick Christiaenss, Thijs Mossel and
Johannes Kint. The captors of the ship answered it as appears [from the inclosed
copyl of the letter which is in the hands of the said Adriaen Block1.
All the witnesses declare that they have knowledge of what is unanimously testi¬
