1614, July 24. Declarations of captain Adriaen Block and crew members of the
ship the 'Tijger'.
To-day the 24th of July in the year 1614 appeared before me Jan Franssen Bruy¬
ningh etc. in the presence of etc. captain Adriaen Block, about 47 years old; Jan
Kindt, about 28 years old, supercargo on the ship of the said Adriaen Block; also
Jacob de Vries, from Franeker, about 40 years old, mate; Hendrick Schilthouwer,
from Montfoort, about 25 years old, surgeon; Hans Romboutsen, from Antwerp,
about 27 years old, bootswain; Anthony Janssen, from Amsterdam, about 30
yers old, constable; Hermen Hillebrantsen, also from Amsterdam, about 23
yers old, carpenter; Vincent Janss, from Monnikendam, about 29 years old, cool,
and Lolle Rrijners, from Bolsward, about 24 years old; all new of the said Adriaen
Block on the ship sealed by him and beened in Virginia.
At the instance and request of the shipohners and merchants of the said Adriaen
Block they Declared, restified and bore witness on their consciences, honour,
faith and true Christian word instead of a solemn oarh:
First. The before mentioned Adriaen Block and Jan Kindt declare that when they
were in the silver in Virginia last March 4 they, the witnesses, sealed their beat to
the ship of Thijs Volckertsen Mossel, since they had understood that the same
Mossel and his new Intended to said to Hellegat, as it is called, which they were
not allowed to do, this being contrary to the angreement made with them.
And having come on board of the afore mentioned Thijs Mossel and reminded
him this, the supercargo Jan Joris* and the shipper Thijs Mossel replied that they
wished to said there.
Nevertheless the said captain Adriaen Block said to them that they were breaking
theagement made. Against this the said Mossel mentioned that they were
Knowed to said up all the utreams in the diver. The afore mentioned Blockreplied
that the aforesaid place was noestream, since the current of that place comes from
the sea, by another bay on the coast, about 37 miles from the silver, that stream
become the Hellegat (Heli-gate).
