. Een Adriaen van Ostade ( nummer 7 in de veiling De Vogel ;
HdG 821 ) is alleen nog bekend door een prent van J . Suyderhoef , ' Het verkeer-
bord ' ( afb . 11 ). Nummer 9 , David Teniers , is ons onbekend , nummer 11 , Jan Steen
( HdG 828 ) is vele jaren in het Gemeentemuseum te Den Haag geweest en is nu
in particulier bezit te Amstelveen : ' dit stuk is zeer meesterlijk , uitvoerig en fraay
geschilderd , en waar in de Actiën by uitstek zyn in agt genomen ' ( afb . 10 ). Behalve
twee bloemstukken van Rachel Ruysch uit 1738 , een Oude man in interieur van
Michiel van Musscher 2 en een Allegorie van Barend Graat bevatte de collectie
17 prenten , 15 nummers met mathematische , physische en optische en andere
instrumenten , 26 nummers met talrijke zilveren , kopere penningen en munten en
tenslotte 205 nummers , vooral ' historische ' en ' godgeleerde ' boeken .
Herengracht 472 - een huis , overbuur van de Van Eeghens , met vele bekende
bewoners . Ruim twintig jaar , van 1773 tot 1794 , hing er in goed gezelschap het
portret van Abraham van Lennep dat daarna - 122 jaar nadat Netscher het vol-
tooid had - voorgoed Amsterdam verliet om via Parijs , Rome , Parijs en Brussel
in 1976 in Nederlands bezit terug te keren , zij ' t dan opnieuw gehuisvest in Parijs .

nevenstaande dubbelportret , gemonogrameerd
Thomas de Keijser en gedateerd 1636 . Het mo-
dieus ongeïdentificeerde paar staat op een terras
met op de hoek van de ballustrade de Arundel-
Homerus ! Hoe kende De Keijser dit beeld ? Door
tekeningen van Jacques de Gheijn III ? Een
repliek van de Arundel-Homerus is nooit opge-
doken . Hoe ' t zij , het beeldhouwwerk diende al
in 1636 als een ' antiek ' tuinbeeld op een achter-
grond ; 36 jaar vóór Caspar Netscher het beeld
als toegift aanbrengt .

AMSTERDAM AND THE ' ONBEKEND SOORT VAN ZEEWORM '
IN THE 1730's

The last week of 1731 saw a dangerous storm-surge , on a par with those of the
fifteenth century , or of 1953 , when an ultrastrong wind from the north drove an
exceptionally high tide through the narrowest part of the North Sea where the
coast of the Netherlands bends outward to meet East Anglia's outward eastern
sea frontage , ( some of us can recall what happened in 1953 when the Dutch coast
south of Rotterdam was almost engulfed ; few Britons realise that only a slightly
higher tide would have had the same results for us .) In 1731 the flooding before
the storm-surge was particularly serious because the sea defences , especially along
the coasts of North Holland and the northern boundary of West Friesland , were
not in good order because they had been attacked by a marine borer of wood ,
referred to in contemporary reports as a sea or pile worm , but in reality the s till
dangerous teredo navalis , the ship-worm of antiquity well-known to seafarers in
the antipodes from classical times , and even now still at its evil work among other
places on the west coast of the United States 1
.
Because of this infestation of the woodwork in the omringdijk around the area
north of Amsterdam 2
, a lot of damage resulted from the storms of the New Year
of 1731-1732 . The usual commission of enquiry into such disasters was appointed
by the States of Holland and made its official report in the late spring of 1732 3
. As
Many organizations , and many individuals , have helped me to pursue my enquiries into this fascinating
topic . I am grateful in the highest degree to the Librarians and Head Archivists and their staff at the
head office of the Netherlands Public Water Authority at The Hague , at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek ,
and at the Algemeen Rijksarchief , the provincial Archives of North Holland at Haarlem and to all my
friends at the Town Archives of Amsterdam . In the Maritime section of the Zoological Institute of
Amsterdam University I was shown many specimens of the indeed extremely worm-like t . navalis .
And at the Tropical Institute in Amsterdam I was shown what damage could be done even to the
thoughest timber in the world , by the insatiable and now far from ' onbekend ' t . navalis .
