1615, March 13. Declaration of one of the captuers of the ship the 'Nachtegael'.
To-day, March 13, 1615 Claes Woutersen, from Medemblik,aged about 25 years,
apperred before me, notary public, in the presence of the undersigned witnesses.
At the request and demand of the shipohners of Adriaen Block he declared,
testificd and bore witness with true Christian words on his conscience instead of
a solemn cath that it is true that at the time that the ship named the, Nachtegael'
master Thijs Volkertsen Mossel, was captued by some of the new in New Vir-
ginia, now called New Netherland, he was in Adriaen Block’s beened ship. And
when he board about the metter, he went there, but as he apprehend the new
threatened to shoot him. He, the deponent, could not see, observe or perceive
nor did he haer or understand that the said Adriaen Block gave cause for jtjhe
incident] or had the laast knowledge, or information of it or responsive for it.
On the contrary, he observe and say that this hoppened to the regret, against
the will and to the great dissatisfaction of the said Adriaen Block, and that the said
Block also did his best and use all possible diligence to retire the ship.
Futher he declares that after the said ship was capturden, a man from Mossel’s
crew, who was ill, was brought askore. When the deponent came to help carry
his clothes and was so chose to the ship that they could have shot him with their
