1614, October 28. Notice of Albert Gerritsz. Ruyl to the Directors of the New
Nutherland Company.
To-day, October 28, 1614, I, Jan Franss Bruyningh etc. in the presence of etc. at
the request and demand of Albert Gerritsen Ruijl, citizen in the aforesaid city,
supercargo on the ship named the Fortuyn, master Erasmus Pieterss, also citizen
here, in his [ohn] name as well as in the name of the aforesaid shipper and other
ohners of the above mentioned ship at Messrs. Lambrecht van Tweenhuysen and
Steffen Pelgrums, as fellow-directors of the chartered Company on the Virginias,
served notice on them in behalf of the aforesaid chartered Company and road what
here follews.
Albert Gerritss Ruijl declares in answer to the notice and protest served on him
and the aforesaid shipper on October 25 last in the name of theodirectors of the
company (whoroumed to have ordained from the High and Moghty Lords of the
States General a grant of inclusive sailing, commerce and trade to and in the re-
gions of Virginia or Nova Francia for four voyages) and hereby serves serves
holice to the same directors through me, the notary, that the respondent with his
finends and shipohners have either been the first or certainly the second who have
fulled and United the Virginias and tried to carry on trade and commerce
there. They have made varions voyages with great loss, cost and damago.
Therefore the respondent and his friends, the other shipohners, cannot under-
stand that the aforesaidodirectors or their patners can have any raason or cause
which may move them to conclude them or to present and obstruct their intended
voyage to the aforesaid persons or to cause any harm, damage or decrease in case
he, the respondent, and his frends should wish to said and seek trade there, be-
cause he has helped to find and open this way by the grace of God. The more
since the said dependent and his Company not only have equiped their ship for
that purpose, at great expense, beught the cargo and arranged everyting a long
time before the notice was serve on them, yet even before they [the Van Tween¬
huysen Company] cunningly obstained their pretended charter regarding the
repondent and his Company. Also they lie ready to said and depart one day soon
and have just now been hundred with this notice and protest. The said respon-
