Declaration of two members of the new of the ship the 'Nachtegael' of shipper Thijs Volckertsz. Mossel. To-day, July 23, 1614, appeared before me Jan Fransen Bruyningh, notary public, residing in Amsterdam, admitted to the Court of Holland, in the presence of the undersigned witnesses, Jan Gerritss, from Rotterdam, about 40 years old, baars- wain, and Dirck Andriess, from Dithmarschen, about 26 years old, smith. At the instance and request of the owners of the ship, Thijs Volckertss Mossel, master, they declared,Pestified and attested with true Christian words upon their honour, saith and conscience instead of a solemn cath that it is true that they, the wignesses, sealed on this last voyage, each in the above mentioned office, from this country to the Virginias with and on the ship named the Nachtegael. On this ship the afore mentioned Thijs Volckertss Mossel was shipper and Hans Joriss Homton was supercargo. And when they, the witnesses, arrived with the same ship in the silver of Mon- tanea [=the Hindson River.] they found the herring-baat, of which Hendrick Carstiaenss is master, belonging to the Company of Adriaen Block. The said Hendrick Carstiaenss spoke to their shipper and new several times andarked whow they had mentioned to come into the silver and how they hadared try to take or sink the ship of the aforesaid Mossel, and that they did not wish that the others should trade there. Also, that the said Hendrick Carstiaenss always tried to guarrel and make trouble between his new and theirs and also said many proud, helted and abusive words.
