Question/answer » Why is my name shown with my posts and on my profile?

On the Stamboom Forum your name is shown with your forum posts. Your name is also on your profile page. Do you list family names in "Wie (onder)zoekt wie"? Then your name is shown there too.

Why is my name there?

The forum is a conversation between researchers. In a conversation you want to know who you are talking to. Without a name you cannot judge an answer. And you cannot see whether someone has helped before.

In "Wie (onder)zoekt wie" your name is exactly the point. Other people are looking for the same family names. That way they can find you and get in touch.

Is that allowed under privacy law?

Yes. We show your name because it is part of the service you use. Privacy law (GDPR) calls this "performance of the contract". You can read this in our privacy policy and in article 19 of our terms and conditions.

We never show your e-mail address. Does someone want to contact you? That goes through a form.

Can I change my name?

  1. Go to My Stamboom Forum › Profile › Personal details.
  2. Enter the name you want to show.
  3. Save.

Please note: your name in older forum posts does not change along automatically.

What happens to my old posts?

Your forum posts stay. We do not delete them. That keeps a forum conversation readable for others.

Do you no longer want your name shown with your old posts? That is possible. Send a message to privacy@coret.org. We will then replace your name with "Uitgeschreven lid" (deregistered member). The text of your posts stays.

Is your name in the text of a post, for instance because someone mentions you? Then that name does remain visible.

What can I hide myself?

You decide who may see your profile picture and your profile text. You choose between everyone, members only or friends only. You set that in your personal details.

Do you no longer want to appear in "Wie (onder)zoekt wie"? Then remove the family names in your profile. Your name will disappear from that overview.

May I use a pseudonym?

Yes. A pseudonym is allowed. Just your initials is fine too.

One thing is not allowed: using someone else's name. The name of a company or an archive is not allowed either. If you do so anyway, we will change the name. In case of misuse we can close your account.
