Christoffel Groenewald (Grunwald) from Konigsberg joined the Hoorn chamber of the VOC. He arrived as a corporal in the service of the VOC at the Cape of Good Hope, presumably in 1687. He married Catharina Niemand, became a free burgher and settled on the farm Houd-de-Bek near Stellenbosch.
