President of the Worlds Congress Auxiliary of the Worlds Columbian Exposition, Chicago, 11. Hox. C. C. Bouwzy. Dtan Sin: The National Temperance Society and Publication House, in carryins out the plans tor a Worlds Temperance Congress, which were in part formulated and promulgated betore the decision was made to hold the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, desires to work in perfect harmony with the plans of the Wontns Covontss Auxitiauv, and in addition to the holding ot our oun special Congress, under our oun officers, with arrangements tor day and evenins meetings, also to unite in the popular Union meetings, to be held under the auspices of the Worlds Congress Auxiliary, and help to make the occasion the greatest gatherins of the world's hosts of temperance workers ever held. Lenclose preliminary call of the Worlds Temperance Congress Commit- tee of our Society, and also desire to report what has since been done to tur- ther this object. Onder instructions trom our Societys Worlds Temperance Congress Committee, 1 visited Europe last summer, conferred with many prominent workers trom many countries, and secured promises from all of hearty co- operation in the movement. Lattended the International Convention of the Independent Order of Good Templars, held in the city of Edinburgh, Scot- land, when representatives from fifty-two Grand Lodges were present, repre- sentins the United States, Canada, England, Treland, Scotland, Wales, Nor- way, Sweden, Denmark, Isle of Man, Africa, India, New Zealand, Queensland, etc. This order represents 418. 000 adults, and 160. 000 juveniles. The follow- ins resolutions were unanimously adopted: 1. Resolved, That we most heartily endorse the call of the National Tem- perance Society tor a Worlds Temperance Congress, to be composed of all triends of temperance without respect to organiration, creed, sex, or color, to be held in the Eitrof Fnicas Suring Fe Wrunfds Colambian Er. Eeittera in together with five other representatives to be appointed by the R. W. G. Templar, de the representatives trom tuis body to the proposed Congress. 2. Resolved, That we recommend that each Grand Lodge throughout the world be requested to appoint delegates to this proposed Worias lemperance Congress. 3. Resolved, That the Executive of this body be authorized to conter with the Worlds Congress Auxilary of the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and secure one day 1o be set apart and khown as Good Templar Day, and mat the Executive be instructed to arrange a programme for such day, and to have prepared a condensed aistory of the Order, as invited by the National Temperance Society. Resolved, That the Executive be also authorized, in connection with the Grand Lodge of Illinois, to secure space in the Exposition for a display of Good Templar literature, supplies, etc. which shall be headquarters tor the Good Templars of the wortd durins the progress of the Exposition. The tollowing were elected delegates to the Worlds Temperance Con- Dr. Oronhyatekha, of Canada; B. F. Parker, Wisconsin; S. D. Hastings, Wisconsin; J. N. Stearns, New Vork; Mrs. Franc E. Finch; Vriah Copp. It. and Mrs. O. Myhrman, Illinois. In England the greatest interest was manifested and hearty co operation assured. The tollowins Advisory Committee nas been appointed by our Society to take charge of the preliminary work in Creat Britain: Dr. B. W. Richardson, F. R. S. the Venerable Archdeacon Farrar, D. D. F. R. S. Robert Rae, J. H. Raper, His Eminence Cardinal Archbishop Mannins, Joseph Malins, Frederie Smith, Rev. Dr. Danson Burns, Charles Wakely. laddressed several representative gatherings under the auspices of the National Temperance League, and of the United Kingdom Alliance, givins the details as far as possible, and the plans of the Worlds Temperance Con- gress in Chicago. Sir Wiltred Lawson, Archdeacon Farrar, Dr. Richardson, Rev. Dr. Dauson Burns and others expressed the strongest desire tor the success of the movement, and promised hearty co operation. At Zurich, Switzerland, T met Dr. A. Forel, one of the ablest physicians in that country, who is greatly interested in the proposed Congress. He is an active member of te blue Cross movement: promised a paper upon the scientifie aspect of the question: and will attend the Congress if possible. Mr. A. M. Powell, one of our Societys Worlds Temperance Congress Committee, nas recently visited Creat Britain and Belgium, held conferences with the British Advisory Committee, and reports a growins interest amons all in behalf of the Congress. Papers have been promised by Dr. Richardson, Canon Farrar, Sir Wiltred Lawson, Cardinal Mannins, Dr. Moeller, of Brus- sels, and others. gress: Since my return to this country l have attended the annual session of the National Division of the Sons of Temperance of North America, held in the city of St. John, Province of New Brunswick, Canada, with representatives trom the various States and the Dominion Provinces. The following resolu- tions were unanimously adopted: 1.
