the Silver production of all other countries nas also veen represented to your
Committee as comparatively stationary since 1862. It is taken at a little over
2,600, 0001. annually.
the production of Silver in Mexico and South America is represented to
have veen very steady. The annual amount is estimated at 6000, 000 1. tor the
years between 1832 and 1867. It nas since veen supposed to have tallen to
5000, 0001. notwithstandins a decided increase in the Caracoles Mines. Except
tor this circumstance, il the ticures are at all trustworthy, the decline in the
pield would have veen greater.
The latest estimates of the Commissioner tor Minins Statisties of the pield of
these Mines are the tollowins:
Accordins to every estimate, the increase in the production since 1870 is
wholly accounted tor by the increased pield in the Mines of the United States.
Pour Committee, in a subsequent part ot their Report, discuss the provabte
production of the mines of the United States durins the last two gears, and
examine the discrepancies in the various estimates: but even on the basis of the

tour Committee, wvile they telt the extreme importance ot obtainins tull
information in respect ot these Mines, which are certain, in so large a measure,
to affect the tuture price of Silver, nevertheless abstained trom callins witnesses
with regard to them. They considered that only persons intimately acquaintea
with the Mines themselves would be competent to speak with tull knowtedge on
the subject: vut such persons, unless specially appointed to inspect the Mines
by some Covernment authority, would provably be interested in the success of
the Mines, and their evidence coula scarcely ve treated as attoxether impartial.
Onofficial estimates of the value of these Mines, it adopted by a Com.
mittee of the House of Commons, might ve utilieed tor speculative purposes,
rovile pour Committee would have veen without the poier to check or
substantiate their correctness. On the other hand, pour Committee nave n0
resitation in sivins a prominent place in their Report to the official statements
made, as to the capacity of the Mines, by Covernment authorities in the United
States. 1 must, nowever, ve distinetly understood that pour Committee, in
sivins publicity to the information conveyea in these statements, do not in any
way make themselves responsible, either tor the statisties which are put torward
in them, or tor the opinions expressed.
