They considered that only persons intimately acquaintea with the Mines themselves would be competent to speak with tull knowtedge on the subject: vut such persons, unless specially appointed to inspect the Mines by some Covernment authority, would provably be interested in the success of the Mines, and their evidence coula scarcely ve treated as attoxether impartial. Onofficial estimates of the value of these Mines, it adopted by a Com. mittee of the House of Commons, might ve utilieed tor speculative purposes, rovile pour Committee would have veen without the poier to check or substantiate their correctness. On the other hand, pour Committee nave n0 resitation in sivins a prominent place in their Report to the official statements made, as to the capacity of the Mines, by Covernment authorities in the United States. 1 must, nowever, ve distinetly understood that pour Committee, in sivins publicity to the information conveyea in these statements, do not in any way make themselves responsible, either tor the statisties which are put torward in them, or tor the opinions expressed.
