From 1873 until well into the twentieth century, the Holland-America Line (HAL) transported businessmen, tourists and emigrants to America. Between 1880 and 1920, around one million Eastern Europeans traveled to America via Rotterdam. The HAL had offices in Bulgaria, Latvia and Russia where tickets could be purchased for the train to Rotterdam, the boat to America and again the train to every station in the new world. The passenger lists offer a wealth of information, such as the paid travel sum, the number of people and sometimes what kind of luggage they had with them.
This index contains 2,776,516 historical person listings.
