Jan Albert van der Warf studeert rechten in Groningen als de oorlog begint. Hij woont nog altijd bij zijn moeder thuis. Zij legt elke ochtend kleren voor hem klaar. Maar het lukt hem maar niet zijn doctoraal te halen.

In 1940, op 39-jarige leeftijd, probeert hij het op een andere manier: hij gaat praten met de professoren van de rechtenfaculteit, maar die weigeren hem te helpen. Een vriend raadt hem aan naar de SD in het Scholtenhuis te gaan. De SD’er die hij voor zich krijgt op het Scholtenhuis wil hem wel helpen, maar dan moet hij eerst iets voor de SD doen: hij moet naar preken luisteren van hervormde predikanten en hem rapporteren wat zij zeggen.

Jan Albert vindt dit wel een plezierige opdracht, want hij houdt van preken en voert hij zijn opdracht trouw uit. Door zijn rapportages wordt een predikant gearresteerd en in Duitsland vermoord.

Na de oorlog worden de geestesvermogen van Jan Albert onderzocht. De Bijzondere Raad van Cassatie beslist uiteindelijk: vermindering van de straf tot vijf jaar. Want: ‘Er was geen sprake van strafrechtelijke schuld in volle omvang. […] Door zijn opvoeding, zijn levenswijze en de levensinstelling en mentaliteit van de verdachte en zijn ouders, is de verdachte getekend. Hij wordt nauwelijks door zijn omgeving als normaal aanvaard. Mogelijk heeft verdachte psychopathische trekken, zodat hij de volle omvang van zijn daden niet heeft kunnen overzien.’
