Friesland heeft ook haren honderdjarigen inwoner. De heer H. J. Westra, te Kollum, 26 Januari 1800 te Rinsumageest geboren, is de jubilaris; een man, in zijn dorp en omgeving zeer hoog geacht.
De grijsaard is nog kras, zijne gezondheid laat niets te wenschen, zijn geheugen nog goed; enkel de oogen worden minder en het loopen gaat ook niet vlot meer. Tot het jaar 1883 was Westra paardenhandelaar die groote zaken deed en bekend stond als iemand die de paarden bij uitstek kende, zoodat hij meermalen deel uitmaakte van keuringscommissies. Paardenhandelaar te zijn brengt met zich, te reizen en te trekken, en de heer W. heeft daaraan zijn deel wel gehad. In 1883, dus 83 jaren oud, reisde hij nog alleen van Kollum naar Amsterdam; hij gevoelde nog lust de tentoonstelling te bezoeken en zag tegen de reis niet op.
Natuurlijk was het geheele dorp in feestdos ter eere van den honderdjarige; van wijd en zijd kwamen gelukwenschen in. Met een lachend gelaat moest de grijsaard bekennen, dat hij zooveel eer niet verwacht had.
Eigenaardig is het, hoe groot de belangstelling van dezen grijsaard is in den strijd der Transvaalschen Boeren tegen Engeland. Alle dagen moet hij op de hoogte gehouden worden van de gebeurtenissen op het oorlogsterrein. Zelf kan hij niet meer lezen; doch natuurlijk wordt er voor gezorgd dat „papake” goed op de hoogte blijft.
